Unemployment benefit in Portugal 2026: how much you get

Work out your 2026 unemployment benefit in Portugal: 65% of reference pay, floor 537.13 EUR, ceiling 1,342.83 EUR and the 10% cut after 180 days.

The 2026 rule in one paragraph

The unemployment benefit pays 65% of your reference earnings (Art. 28 n.1 of Decree-Law 220/2006). In 2026, that figure always sits between two limits: 537.13 EUR at the bottom and 1,342.83 EUR at the top. Anyone who earned the minimum wage or more has a higher floor of 617.70 EUR. All these numbers come from the same place: the IAS (Social Support Index), which in 2026 is 537.13 EUR.

The calculation in 3 steps (Art. 28)

Social Security does not pay on your last salary. It pays on a historical average called reference earnings (RR).

  1. Add up your earnings over the 12 reference months, meaning everything that paid into Social Security (base salary plus the holiday and Christmas allowances). Social Security counts the 12 months up to about two months before unemployment.
  2. Divide by 360. That gives your daily reference earnings.
  3. Multiply by 65%. That is your daily benefit. For the monthly figure, multiply by 30.

Do not know your total? It is in Segurança Social Direta, under "Conta-corrente" and "Remunerações". It is the basis for everything.

The 2026 limits (the table)

After the 65% calculation, the result is pushed inside these limits (Art. 29 of Decree-Law 220/2006):

LimitMonthly value 2026Legal basis
General floor537.13 EUR1 times IAS (Art. 29 n.1)
Floor if you earned the minimum wage or more617.70 EUR1.15 times IAS (Art. 29)
Ceiling1,342.83 EUR2.5 times IAS (Art. 29 n.1)

The raised floor of 617.70 EUR exists to protect lower earners. If your reference earnings were equal to or above the guaranteed minimum monthly wage (920 EUR in 2026, Art. 273 of the Labour Code), the benefit never drops below 617.70 EUR.

The 10% cut after 6 months (Art. 28 n.2)

One rule catches many people off guard: from day 181, the benefit drops 10%.

It is in Art. 28 n.2 of Decree-Law 220/2006. The aim is to nudge active job search.

Mark the date: 6 months after the start. That is when the amount changes.

How long it lasts (Art. 37)

Duration is not the same for everyone. It depends on two things: your age and the number of months with contributions before unemployment.

AgeFewer than 15 months of contributions15 to 24 months24 months or more
Under 30150 days210 days330 days
30 to 39180 days330 days420 days
40 to 49210 days360 days540 days
50 or older270 days480 days540 days

On top of this come contribution top-ups (Art. 37 n.2): an extra 30 days (up to age 40), 45 days (40 to 49) or 60 days (50 or older) for each 5 years of contributions in the last 20 years.

The 10% top-up for couples and single-parent families

There is a 10% increase on the calculated amount when:

  • Both members of a couple are receiving unemployment benefit and have dependent children, or
  • You are a single-parent family and receive no court-ordered maintenance.

In those cases, you add 10% to the figure from the calculation. You must request it and prove the situation to Social Security.

What if you fall short of 360 days?

If you do not have 360 days of contributions in the last 24 months, there is still a door: the social unemployment benefit. It is tighter.

  • You need 180 days of contributions in the previous 12 months.
  • Your household income, per person, cannot exceed 80% of the IAS (about 429.70 EUR in 2026).
  • The value is 80% of the IAS (no dependants) or 100% of the IAS (with dependants).

4 common mistakes about the amount

  1. Thinking you get your whole salary. You do not. You get 65% of reference earnings, with caps.
  2. Forgetting the 10% cut after 6 months. The household budget changes in month 7. Plan for it.
  3. Mixing up last month's salary with reference earnings. The calculation is on the 12-month average, not on the last payslip.
  4. Applying late. You have 90 days from the end of the contract to apply. Miss it and you lose benefit days.

How it all connects

The quick math: add 12 months of earnings, divide by 360, multiply by 65%, then push inside the 2026 limits.

Frequently asked questions

How much unemployment benefit will I get in Portugal in 2026?+
65% of your reference earnings (Art. 28 n.1 of Decree-Law 220/2006). Reference earnings are the wages reported to Social Security in the 12 months before unemployment, divided by 360. The monthly amount cannot be below 537.13 EUR or above 1,342.83 EUR in 2026.
What is the maximum unemployment benefit in 2026?+
1,342.83 EUR per month. Art. 29 n.1 of Decree-Law 220/2006 caps it at 2.5 times the IAS (Social Support Index). In 2026 the IAS is 537.13 EUR, so the ceiling is 537.13 times 2.5, which is 1,342.83 EUR. Even if you earned 3,000 EUR, the benefit stops at this ceiling.
What is the minimum unemployment benefit in 2026?+
537.13 EUR per month, equal to one IAS (Art. 29 n.1 of Decree-Law 220/2006). There is a higher floor of 617.70 EUR for anyone whose reference earnings were equal to or above the minimum wage (920 EUR in 2026).
I earned the minimum wage. How much do I get?+
If your reference earnings were equal to or above the guaranteed minimum monthly wage (920 EUR in 2026), the benefit is never below 617.70 EUR per month, which is 1.15 times the IAS (Art. 29 of Decree-Law 220/2006). It protects lower earners from falling below this floor.
Does the unemployment benefit drop after a few months?+
Yes. From day 181, the daily amount is reduced by 10% (Art. 28 n.2 of Decree-Law 220/2006). Someone on 900 EUR drops to about 810 EUR. The legal floor still applies: the amount never falls below 537.13 EUR, or 617.70 EUR where that applies.
How long does the unemployment benefit last?+
It depends on your age and the number of months with contributions before unemployment (Art. 37 of Decree-Law 220/2006). It runs from 150 days (under 30, short record) up to 540 days (50 or older). There are also top-ups for each 5 years of contributions in the last 20 years.
Is unemployment benefit taxed for income tax and Social Security?+
No. The unemployment benefit is not subject to income tax (IRS) and pays no Social Security contribution. The amount granted to you is the amount you receive, with no deductions.
How many days of contributions do I need to qualify?+
360 days of employed work, with contributions, in the 24 months before unemployment (Art. 22 n.1 of Decree-Law 220/2006). It does not have to be continuous or with the same employer. If you fall short of 360, you may get the social unemployment benefit, which is stricter.
